Tonka, enjoying his new life

Tonka, enjoying his new life

A story from Tonka’s adopter, Kaitlin:

Tonka was an owner surrender who was brought into the SPCA in July 2012. He’s a Lab/Rotty, my two favorite breeds, so it’s easy to say he stole my heart almost immediately.

I had already adopted a cat (Willow), so I really wasn’t looking for the added responsibility of another animal, but I knew this dog was special. Surprisingly enough, there was little to no interest shown to adopt Tonka. At some point, word started to get around that Tonka was in danger of being euthanized since he wasn’t well-behaved and potential adopters didn’t show interest in him.

I adopted Tonka in November 2012, and he has been the best dog I have EVER owned. It took about an hour before he had adjusted to life at my house, with my other two dogs and two cats. All you have to do is snap your fingers and he sits, point to the ground and he lays down. He walks perfectly on the leash and is 100% dog- friendly.

I can’t stress enough how much of a blessing he has been to my life and my family members. He is also a perfect case of how you can’t judge a dog solely on the behavior shown at the SPCA. Tonka was hyper, walked horribly on a leash, and would not sit when I met him at the SPCA. But as soon as he was in his forever home, he was glad to show off everything that he knew. He’s my best friend, my partner in crime, and the best dog I’ve ever had.
